The trackball was invented 18 years earlier than the computer mouse. In 1946, the Royal Navy developed a "rolling ball" device for radar target tracking, realizing cursor positioning through the rolling of a metal ball. Due to military confidentiality restrictions, this technology was not released for civilian use until 1968. Since then, benefiting from its precise positioning and fixed base design, the trackball has shown unique application advantages in precision operation scenarios such as medical imaging, with its core technologies undergoing continuous upgrading and iteration.

First Generation: Mechanical Trackball

A mechanical trackball consists of a rolling ball, transmission shafts, grating wheels, infrared LEDs, and photosensitive sensors. The rotation of the ball drives two perpendicular transmission shafts, which in turn rotate the grating wheels at the ends. The infrared LEDs and phototransistors on both sides of the grating wheels convert the blocking and transmission of light into square-wave pulses. The control chip calculates the movement speed and displacement based on the frequency and quantity of pulses, and determines the movement direction via the 90-degree phase difference between the two sets of signals.

In the 1990s, mechanical trackballs became standard measurement components for medical equipment such as ultrasound scanners. However, physical wear caused by mechanical contact intensified with frequent use, driving the technological upgrade toward non-contact solutions.

Second Generation: Optical Trackball

In 1995, Logitech launched the TrackMan Marble, introducing optical imaging positioning technology to the trackball industry for the first time. Optical trackballs adopt a non-contact optical sensing mechanism: LEDs beneath the ball emit continuous light, which projects onto the micro-textures of the ball surface. The optical sensor captures the reflected light, and the chip calculates the movement trajectory by analyzing changes in the reflected light signals.

Eliminating mechanical wear fundamentally, optical sensing effectively enhances product reliability and service life, remaining the mainstream technical solution for medical-grade trackballs to this day.

From Technological Iteration to Practical Solution Implementation

Different medical devices have differentiated requirements for trackballs. Starting from actual clinical needs, Zhuhai Xinhe integrates rigorous industry technical standards into product design, ensuring every trackball delivers stable and reliable performance for medical application scenarios.

Precise Control for Delicate Clinical Operations

Equipped with dual-channel optical sensing components and stainless steel transmission structures, our optical trackball modules accurately capture XY two-dimensional displacement with minimal positioning error and sensitive response. Even under long-term high-frequency continuous operation, the cursor maintains stable tracking without drift, guaranteeing high precision for delicate clinical operations including lesion tracing and organ measurement.

Robust Hardware for Complex Working Conditions

Featuring excellent EMC electromagnetic compatibility and strong anti-interference capability, our trackball modules operate stably in strong electromagnetic field environments such as ultrasound and MRI equipment. With a standard 25mm ball diameter and a slim, compact structure, the products are perfectly adapted to terminal medical devices with limited panel installation space.

Wide System Compatibility for Flexible Integration

Compliant with standard USB protocols, the trackballs are compatible with all mainstream operating systems including Windows, Linux, Unix, and Mac OSX. The plug-and-play design greatly simplifies equipment integration and reduces installation costs for manufacturers.

Full-Customization Services for Tailored Solutions

We provide comprehensive OEM/ODM customization services covering ball size, mounting aperture, interface specifications, and functional configurations. Our trackballs are widely applied in medical imaging and diagnostic equipment, ultrasonic diagnostic instruments, surgical navigation systems, and other high-precision medical devices.
